How Shiatsu Enhances:
Shiatsu strives to help eliminate ailments and prevent their recurrence and the development of other ailments. Pressure applied by the hands on certain points of the skin stimulates the body's natural recuperative powers and removes fatigue by causing the diffusion of the lactic acid and carbon dioxide that accumulate among the tissues to cause muscular stiffness and stagnation of the blood. These accumulations of fatigue causing materials apply abnormal pressure on the nerves, blood, and lymph vessels. This causes irregular internal secretions and peculiarities in the skeletal system and internal organs. By diffusing fatigue causing accumulations, shiatsu pressure restores flexibility to the muscles tissues and relieves pain producing systems. Shiatsu treatment is concerned mainly with the 660 pressure points (tsubo) where blood vessels, lymph vessels, nerves, and the ductless glands of the endocrine system tend to concentrate or to branch. Namikoshi Shiatsu therapy has organized the tsubo in a system that is based on physiology and pathology.
About Shiatsu Therapy
Shiatsu literally refers to a method of therapy through the use of thumbs and fingers to apply pressure to the surface of the human body to restore orderly body functions. Ever since the beginning of human existence, the method of using fingers for therapeutic use has been practiced. When we experience some sluggishness, aches and pain, we naturally respond to the discomfort by rubbing, caressing and pressing the area. This involuntary manipulation is the origin of "te ate", which literally means hand placement, or manual tending. The Shiatsu therapy we now practice has been developed systematically through the adoption of scientifically proven theories of the instinctive manipulation by fingers as well as the refined clinical experiences of the therapy itself. (Naturally, there are many forms of manual manipulation therapy in the world.)
The Japanese word shiatsu is composed of a character meaning finger (shi) and another character meaning pressure (atsu). Shiatsu is the proper application of carefully placed pressure on specific points on the surface of the human body. Pressure is applied with the fingers and hands to eliminate pain and fatigue to stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. Shiatsu is primarily a way to prevent the development of sickness and always keep the body in top condition so that symptoms requiring medical attention do not develop.
